Al Qaeda 2.0
1 x 60 special; 2003; Produced for Discovery Times
Channel
Writer/Director/Producer: Carsten
Oblaender; Co-Producer: Vicky Matthews
The year is
2003, two years after 9/11, and the United
States finds itself in a strange and
unsettling new world of "dirty" bombs, Code
Orange alerts and shoe bombers. Despite a
global war on terrorism, al Qaeda has
morphed into something that is at once less
centralized, more widely spread and more
virtual than its previous incarnation. We
call it Al Qaeda 2.0.
In Al Qaeda 2.0, Peter Bergen,
author of the critically acclaimed book
Holy War Inc., and the first western
author and journalist to secure a
television interview with Osama bin Laden,
travels to Pakistan, Yemen, the Philippines
and Indonesia to ascertain the true threat
of this new version of Al Qaeda. He seeks
answers to questions that lie at the heart
of every person in America. What threat
does al Qaeda 2.0 pose to the post 9/11
world? How effective is the US military
campaign against this new al Qaeda, and how
has Osama bin Laden, the world's most
wanted man, evaded the most powerful army
in history?
Peter Bergen discovers that like a
virulent virus, al Qaeda has mutated into a
more deadly version of the original. And
despite a global war on terrorism, the
threat from al Qaeda remains as high as it
did on 9/11.
The program received a 2004
Bronze Omni Award.
