The Cole Conspiracy
1 x 90 television special; 2005; Produced in High Definition for The History Channel
Writer/Director/Producer: Carsten Oblaender
The deadly "War on Terror" that continues to plague the United States
in Iraq, Afghanistan and at home, began long before several fuel-laden
jets slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The war
began months earlier, on a quiet sweltering morning off the coast of
Yemen when a small fiberglass boat exploded alongside a U.S. destroyer,
killing 17 U.S. sailors and wounding countless others. The full story
of the attack on the USS Cole has never been told.
The Cole Conspiracy takes an action-packed minute-by-minute look at the
attack that claimed the lives of 17 American sailors. It provides viewers with a
first-hand account of the heroic actions of the men and woman on-board the
crippled destroyer as they fought to rescue their crewmates from a fiery hell
and prevent their ship from sinking to a watery grave at the bottom of the
Gulf of Aden.
The Cole Conspiracy is also the story of the al Qaeda terrorists who
meticulously planned and carried out the first military strike in their
declared war against the Untied States. The Cole Conspiracy is a thrilling
political detective story too, as U.S. special agents and investigators put
together the complicated pieces of an intricate puzzle that reveals the
enormity of the al Qaeda network and their ability to harm the United States.
This program received a Silver Telly Award and a CINE Golden Eagle Award in 2006.
