Holy War, Inc.: Inside the Terrorist Network of Osama bin Laden

1 x 60 special; 2001; Produced for The National Geographic Channel
Writer/Director/Producer: Carsten Oblaender; Co-Producer: Vicky Matthews

On September 11, 2001 Osama bin Laden orchestrated the simultaneous highjacking of four planes from within the borders of the United States and ordered them to crash into symbolic landmarks. For the American people, it was an act of unprecedented evil. For the terrorists who carried out the atrocities, it was the first strike in a holy war.

Holy War Inc. is the Emmy-nominated companion documentary to journalist Peter Bergen's acclaimed book of the same title. Bergen is the first western journalist to secure a television interview with Osama bin Laden. In Holy War Inc., Bergen and other terrorism experts from Pakistan, Egypt, the US and Europe, examine the cultural and religious issues behind the conflict.

Holy War Inc. shows viewers that like a giant hand, Al Qaeda spreads its fingers throughout the world. Remote and unconnected cultures in Afghanistan, Albania, Chechnya and the Philippines, are linked to New York, London, Paris and Hamburg. With the help of investigators in Germany, Russia and the US, Holy War Inc. explains how cells of well trained operatives function in these disparate worlds, guided by the common thread that unites them: the influence and inspiration of Osama bin Laden.

Holy War Inc. was nominated for a 2001 News and Documentary Emmy. It also received a 2003 Silver Omni Award.
